Five things I learned this Christmas
Five things I learned this Christmas break:
- On Windows, Chrome installs everything into the current user’s profile,
under
Local Settings\Application Data
, even if you’re an Administrator. I suppose it makes updates easier, but it’s odd if you’re installing for more than one user. File under “Huh.” - Acceptable career choices include: Policeman, Fireman, Spaceman, Cowboy, and Pirate, according to some socks my kids got for Christmas, anyway. No ninjas, but no Software Engineers either. Note for 2009: make or obtain a pair of “I want to be a… Software Engineer” socks.
- Inconsolata is a spiffy monospaced font (and it’s open source too). Easy replacement for Lucida Console on Windows pre-Vista, not sure yet whether it’s better than Bitstream Vera Sans Mono for my Linux box.
- My cunning plan to (automatically; I’m not that sad) watch the output of
date
to see the 2008 leap second failed, because I forgot that time(2) returns UNIX time, which ignores leap seconds entirely:-(
. I got to see twice as much midnight as expected, though. - Quantum of Solace is nowhere near as good as Casino Royale. Representative IMDB review: “Is Quantum of Solace an entertaining action thriller? Unquestionably yes. But is it a James Bond movie? Unfortunately not.” (No permalinks for IMDB comments, apparently.)
Happy New Year!
