Peculate

Google has a product called AdSense for Feeds (by the FeedBurner team) that inserts relevant adverts into an RSS or Atom feed. The keyword here (heh) being ‘relevant’, so I was surprised when I saw the following advert pop up in Google Reader this morning:

A screenshot of Google Reader, from dictionary.com's
“Word of the Day”. The definition is “peculate:
appropriate fradulently.”; an advert for debt consolidation appears
below.

My first thought was “hey, our relevancy scoring sucks!” Then I looked again… and noticed that the text that ‘should’ say “Ads by Google” actually says something else entirely.

Oh, right, not us.
